Mrs. Robinson
One of my favorite films is Mike Nichols’ 1967 classic, The Graduate. It’s largely relatable to young adults, who even after five decades, share the common trend of being largely lost and struggling to connect to past generations. Its willingness to push boundaries made it a staple in the New Hollywood cannon.
Set in affluent Pasadena, CA in the late 1960s there is beautiful design all around. Of course we will be looking at the iconic fashion throughout the film, mainly with the character of Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft).

Mrs. Robinson’s costume design is fairly 1960s modern. She is a middle aged woman who takes pride in her appearance. She dresses her age, not particularly youthful, but very clean, sophisticated and sexy.
There is a lot of commonality in her wardrobe. She is clearly a fan of black, which relates to both the sadness of her character but it’s also a powerful color. She wears a lot of animal print, which definitely plays into the whole cougar hunting down her prey motif. And lots of sheer and lingerie, cause its hot.

As for dressing the part, luckily animal print coats have been in style for the past two winters or so. Of course we prefer vintage here so here’s some Etsy finds that would do the look proud
